Information technology changes the manner and scope in which businesses operate and compete. It is well known how entire businesses have grown owing to innovations in the use of IT, and also how entire businesses have disappeared owing to massive changes wrought by IT. IT is notoriously hard to manage - all that is expected does not happen and many unexpected things happen. The challenge of managing IT is ensuring that the intended changes and innovations are realized, and the unintended ones are kept under control.
How and why IT innovations succeed depends on, amongst other things, the nature of the technology being used, the competitive position the organisation is in, the kind of business it is engaged in, how its employees respond to change, and how it sees its own growth and trajectory. Managing the technology and innovation are key to ensuring success of the changes.
